10. Research Grants
10.1 Types of Research Grants
10.1.1 The funding for research activities at UNIMAS is drawn from local and international public, corporate and private grant sources. As such,
individual researchers and research groups are expected to apply or bid for funding from these sources.
10.1.2 UNIMAS may from time to time set aside a limited amount of research fund to support specific type of research projects. Such funds would be disbursed through (a) top-down mechanism, the prerogative of the Vice Chancellor, amounting to not more than RM200,000 per project or (b) Small Grant Scheme amounting to not more than RM5,000 per project.
10.1.3 UNIMAS encourages researchers to access external research grants, whether from official government sources (e.g. MOHE’s Fundamental Grant, MOSTI’s ScienceFund), commercial/corporate funding, research trusts (e.g. Wellcome Trust, EU grants) or from other academic institutions in the form of individual or joint institutional research projects. Such external grants reflect external recognition of research competence and enhance both the researcher’s reputation and the University’s research standing.
10.1.4 To enhance the chances of securing external grants, UNIMAS researchers are encouraged to establish or join national and international research networks, and to collaborate with their local and international counterparts.
10.2 Management of Research Grants
10.2.1 All research grants secured by the staff of UNIMAS shall be deposited with the UNIMAS Bursary Office. Alternative arrangement can only be allowed if there is a prior agreement between the researchers, the funding agency and the University.
10.2.2 Unless otherwise specified, research grants from the aforementioned sources are meant for supporting data collection costs (such as survey and research travelling expenses), research consumables, experimental material supplies, remuneration for research assistants, specialised software, hardware maintenance, rentals, attending local conferences (relevant to the research) etc.
10.2.3 The procurement procedure for assets, supplies and services using Government research grants shall follow the standard Rules and Regulations imposed by the Treasury and UNIMAS financial procedures. Exceptions, wherever applicable, are allowed for other research grants if and when a different set of financial procedure has been officially endorsed by the researcher(s), the University and the external funding agency.
10.2.4 All assets procured using research grants (all types and sources) shall be the property of UNIMAS, and as such these items must be
inventorised by the respective Faculty/Institute/Centre.
10.2.5 Appointment of Research Fellows and Assistants, when budgeted for in the research grants, shall be formalised through RIMC using appropriate application forms and based on a fixed remuneration scheme.
10.2.6 Research grantees are fully responsible in terms of meeting the financial reporting requirement of the sponsor agency.
10.3 Limit on Number of Research Grants
10.3.1 To ensure that research is completed on schedule, all researchers who are also full-time lecturers are limited to leading a maximum of two
research grants/projects at any one time. In addition, these researchers can participate in a maximum of two further projects as a member of the research teams.
10.3.2 Holders of professorial Chairs in faculties/research institutes undertaking cluster research may participate in as many research grants/projects as their full-time dedication to high quality research work allows. Such levels of participation must however, not jeopardise the expected high quality of output of the research institute.
10.3.3 Exceptions to provisions in 10.3.1 and 10.3.2 can be considered and
consented by the RSC on case by case basis.
