01 AIM
The grant provides up to RM5,000 for a one-year award to staff to conduct studies or research which may not be appropriately supported by the regular Fundamental Research Grant, ScienceFund or TechnoFund.
02 OBJECTIVES
The grant is meant to enable staff to carry out the following:
02.a Exploratory study on issues that will serve as the basis for longer term research projects
02.b Extension work on past research projects to bring them up to completion, e.g. due to data which is incomplete, outdated or defective, or for paying the costs of developing graphic/illustrative materials to value-add the outputs.
02.c Opportunistic research on issues (incident-specific/event-related) that suddenly present themselves (e.g. political election, religious festivities) and are of academic interest
02.d Collection, analysis and documentation works on artifacts, biological samples, people, language, or places that have scientific, medical, social and cultural significance. These preservation and archival works should also be related to the needs of exploratory or long-term studies.
Similar to other research fundings, SGS expects grantees to diligently conduct their research projects and eventually publish or showcase their findings.
03 CONDITIONS AND ELIGIBILITY
The grant is available to all staff but is subjected to the following:
03.a Only one such grant can be held at any one time, and the grant is only good for a year with no extension of time allowed. Any subsequent application for this grant will only be considered if the grant holder has successfully completed his earlier project funded by this grant.
03.b A total of RM10,000 can be utilised by every staff member for projects of the above nature. However, each project/application is capped at RM5,000. In other words, this grant will enable a staff member to undertake at least two or more projects of the above nature, so long as each project does not exceed RM5.000, or the sum of all projects does not exceed RM10,000.
03c. Tangible output, e.g. research paper or monograph, systematically documented specimens/samples/artifacts/images, modules et cetera, and a description of future research plan, must be submitted upon completion of this short-term project.
03d. The standard Treasury/UNIMAS financial procedure for fund disbursement, procurement etc. shall be applicable to SGS projects.
03e. The reporting and report reviewing procedures for SGS projects shall follow the regular process adopted for projects funded through the Fundamental Grant Scheme.
04 APPLICATION AND PROCEDURES
04.a Applications for the grant must be forwarded to the Dean of the relevant faculty. Upon endorsement by the Dean, applications should be forwarded to the Director of RIMC who will then present it to the Office of the DVC (R & I) for final endorsement.
04.b Applications must be submitted at least 4-working weeks before the nticipated commencement of the project. This is to enable the proposals to be properly scrutinised, in order to ensure minimum quality and standard are maintained.
04.c Applications must be made using the standard forms used for fundamental research grants application giving a short description of the background, aims and objectives, expected outcomes/contributions, budget proposals and research methodology. A brief description of the expected output (paper, modules et cetera) must also be included.
