Publishing in ISI Journals

Participants will learn how to improve their chances of publishing in rigorously reviewed international journals. The workshop will focus on the British Journal of Psychology, which is edited by the workshop facilitator, Peter Mitchell. The journal was established more than 100 years ago and has published classic articles by Piaget, Bartlett, Eysenck, Broadbent, Gibson, Cattell, Watson, Kohler and many others. The workshop will give the best advice on joining this elite group by publishing in the BJP.

About the Workshop Facilitator

Peter Mitchell is Professor and Director of Studies in Psychology at the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus, based in Semenyih, near Kuala Lumpur. Previously, he was head of the School of Psychology in Nottingham UK. He has published around 100 scientific articles in leading international journals, has published six books and he is editor of the British Journal of Psychology. He has served as Chair of the Developmental Section of the British Psychological Society and as Chief Examiner for the Economic and Social Research Council UK PhD studentship competition. Before joining Nottingham University he worked at the University of Birmingham, University of Oxford, University of Wales and University of Warwick. He also served as visiting professor at McGill University in Canada.

These skills are vital for publishing in ISI journals and for preparing successful applications for research funding.  The workshop will foster understanding of the many benefits of quantitative data analysis as well as the limitations of this approach.

About the Workshop Facilitator

Prof. Dr. Narayanan KulathumaiyerDr Narayanan Kulathumaiyer is presently a Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology. He completed his PhD under the guidance of Professor Hemann Maurer, a leader and pioneer in the area of Hypermedia and Knowledge Management systems. He has also been actively involved in shaping the research directions at the Faculty. Apart from this he has over 15 years of experience in conducting motivation and Education in Human Values training programs. To date, he has over 60 peer-reviewed publications in international journals and conference proceedings.

Prof. Dr. Jane Cardosa receives the Donald MacKay award

The Donald Mackay Medal is awarded annually for outstanding work in tropical health, especially relating to improvements in the health of rural or urban workers in the tropics. Preference is given to suitable medically qualified individuals.

For 2009, the recipient of the award was Prof. Dr. Mary Jane Cardosa; For outstanding work in tropical health, especially relating to improvements in the health of rural or urban workers in the tropics. Preference is given to medically qualified individuals.

Research Capacity Enhancement Workshop Series

The Research and Innovation Management Centre organizes the Research Capacity Enhancement Workshop Series meant for early career researchers and academics looking to develop their research career. In this workshop series, the participants get to learn on writing successful research grants, various research methodologies, data analyses with the aid of computers and using the computers to prepare quality reports and presentations. They will also get to meet fellow researchers, make friends with colleagues from various fields, and share experiences. The following workshops have been successfully completed:

  1. Making the most of an academic career: Connecting teaching, research and publication: 13 April 2009,
  2. Qualitative data analysis with Nvivo8: 15-16 April 2009,
  3. Elementary Statistics for Social Sciences with SPSS: 18-19 May 2009,
  4. Elementary Statistics for Sciences with SPSS: 20 May 2009,
  5. Getting Grant Funding: 16 June 2009, and
  6. Advanced Statistics with SPSS: 30 June – 1 July 2009

Participations in the workshops have been encouraging. The total participants at the six workshops were 142. The participants have also provided good feedback on the quality and appropriateness of the workshops.
